The History of the Gasthof Roessle

The history of the inn begins in the year 1697 with the need of the Wiblingen Monastery in Aufheim for a new administration building (today’s Hotel Gasthof Roessle), as the caving-in of the old administration building was expected to happen any day.

1697

Construction of the new office building (today's Rössle). The foreman was Bartholomäus Kraz, who was assisted by Tyrolean bricklayers. The expenditure for the timber-framed building on the upper floors totalled 1382 guilders and 9 kreuzer (approximately EUR 50,000 in today's money). The bailiff at the time was Paul Ötschmann, born in Heining, Tyrol. He was a fresco painter and created frescoes for the Duke of Württemberg in Stetten Castle in the Rems Valley and the ceiling paintings in the imperial hall of Wettenhausen Abbey. His detailed epitaph on the church tower of Aufheim does not mention his artistic activities. The Amthaus had also preserved a fresco with the coat of arms of the Wiblingen prelate Modest I. Huber until 1969 (north-east corner room on the upper floor).

1805

the property of the Benedictine Abbey of Wiblingen, which had previously been part of Lower Austria, became Bavarian, and with it the municipality of Aufheim. Wiblingen Abbey was secularised by Württemberg. The official residence of Aufheim, which was no longer needed, was later sold.

1970

Acquisition of the Amtshaus from Heinz Bleher Restaurant with 30 seats, farmhouse, Grenzstüble and bowling alleys.

1973

The restoration of the historic official residence in Aufheim was completed as the newly remodelled Gasthof Rössle.

1984

Expansion to increase hotel capacity and extend the restaurant. The former restaurant is now the Zehntstube.
